Big City Bike: Lockdown Accelerates Urban Planning Initiatives

As countries ease lockdown restrictions, cities are prioritizing bikes in their urban infrastructure.

Bogota has replaced 35 miles of traffic lanes with new emergency bike lanes using temporary cones. New York City plans on opening 100 miles of streets to pedestrians in a couple of months—an initiative that will create temporary bike lanes. And, Paris is building a whopping 650-kilometre bike network as part of the RER Vélo Project.
Quarantine has put city life on pause, motivating local governments to accelerate urban planning initiatives. Bikes have become the #TravelRight solution to making street space public again.
